Too Much of a Good Thing

Losing weight is not easy. But, in some ways, it’s something that your body is actually designed to do. It’s possible for you to lose weight, and your body has mechanisms to accomplish that (and even some mechanisms to challenge that). The point is that if you find yourself with a little excess fat, you can use diet and exercise to try to eliminate that fat. Indeed, when it comes to body contouring, removing fat may be the most “do-it-yourself” project you can engage in. That’s not to say that you’ll be able to control every molecule of fat in your body—not even with the best diet. But you’ll generally have some success.

The same cannot be said of excess skin. Excess skin isn’t going anywhere. Now, this may not be a big deal when it’s just a little bit of skin that hangs around your waist. But most people that have a significant amount of excess skin are truly bothered by it—it can change the way they dress, it can change the way they go out in public, the way they feel about themselves, the activities they choose to engage in and so on. In other words, when it comes to excess skin, there can be a quite a few negative impacts. And there’s not really a whole lot you can do, on your own, about it.

So what causes excess skin? This blog is actually going to look at a couple of reasons why you might develop excess skin over the course of your life.

Pregnancy and Child Birth

As any mother knows, pregnancy and child birth (not to mention child-raising) can do a number on your body. There’s the stretching of the skin, the gaining of weight, and then the added stress of child-birth, nursing, and so on. Suffice it to say, this series of events can stretch out your skin quite a bit—and your skin simply does not have the innate elasticity to bounce back from that kind of stress. This means that you will be left with a significant amount of excess skin. And that excess skin can sometimes be difficult to manage. Excess skin from child-bearing will usually manifest around the belly, the hips, and the breasts. According to the website of the Minneapolis tummy tuck experts at Minneapolis Plastic Surgery, there are plastic surgery procedures available to address each of these areas.

Losing Significant Weight

Sometimes, throughout the course of your life, you tend to put on a little weight. This gets easier as we get older, but some people have struggled with weight their entire lives. It takes strict discipline and determination, often coupled with life-changing surgery, to successfully lose a significant amount of weight. But even when you do lose that weight, you may be left with a large amount of excess skin. The extra weight that you used to have stretched out that skin, and just as in the case with pregnancy, your body no longer possesses the elasticity to bounce back. Meaning that skin is going to be there for a while.

The solution is generally a procedure called a body lift. Body lift procedures remove the excess tissue and make the remaining tissues firmer, fitter, and more youthful looking. This can help patients really complete that weight loss journey, letting them enjoy all the perks of having a body they’re truly happy in.

Aging

Sometimes, age just catches up with us. After all, gravity is pulling on your tissues and skin every second of every day—and it’s pulling down. It’s not surprising that, as we age, we would develop excess skin—sometimes in the arms, the legs, the belly. It can happen anywhere. The solution to these issues is usually a lift of some kind—a tummy tuck, an arm lift, a lower body lift. There are a wide variety of procedures designed specifically to help reduce the signs of aging and give you a more youthful appearance by tightening the skin and removing excess skin.

Getting the Youthful Look You Want

With any type of body contouring procedure, you have the opportunity to really define, well, the contours of your body. Some of that you can do naturally, through diet and exercise. But some of that is going to be beyond your control. Excess skin is not something you can really control naturally, however. So if you’re bothered by excess skin—if it gets in the way of how you want to live your life—there are methods to remove it and get the body you want. Those methods begin with body contouring surgery.
